What's Everyone Talking About Evolution Korea Today
Evolution Korea Up until recently, the Korean scientific community was hesitant about working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credence. Silence is no longer an option. The STR has been fighting to eliminate evolution-related content from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm. What is Evolution? Evolution is a theory of science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which may lead to variations in genes or whole genomes. These changes could over generations result in the development of new species. The predominant theory of evolution is natural selection, which explains the process by which those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more often than those with less favorable characteristics. This differing reproduction may be a catalyst to the emergence and evolution of new species. The term “evolution”, which comes from the Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in many different ways as the concept has developed, both in science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species changed into other species in a certain way. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who came up with the term “transmutation” to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student. Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process through which living creatures develop traits to increase their chances of survival or conceiving offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can cause a population to acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the process that drives most evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolutionary because they don't pass on to the next generation. Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial despite the fact that it has been proven true by thousands of scientific tests and it has stood the test of time. They argue that the theory should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary origins for humans as well as Archaeopteryx – a feathered dinosaur which is believed to be the bird's ancestor. Why is Evolution Important to Humanity? Evolution explains how the Earth and all its living creatures came into existence. It also serves as a basis of biology that helps scientists learn how living organisms function and develop. Evolution also demonstrates how different species are linked. Scientists study evolution to better understand the natural world, and to make useful discoveries including the development of new treatments. The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. No other scientific theory can explain more about the universe and life on our planet. It has been thoroughly studied and verified for many years. Many people, including religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory of evolution. It is important to note that evolutionary biology doesn't contradict religious beliefs, since the theory only deals with objects, events and processes within the physical world. In fact, many religious people have discovered ways to reconcile their beliefs with the theory of evolution. For instance certain Christians believe that God created the world through evolution and that humans have an ancestral lineage with other animals. It is essential that science educators advocate for teaching evolution. In some nations around the world there is a growing anti-evolutionist sentiment. In the United States, efforts to restrict the teaching of evolution have made progress in a few states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is pushing for textbooks to include content on the evolutionary history of horses and their Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx. While these are troubling developments, it is important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a wide variety of sources, including fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence. The vast majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. This belief is based on various reasons. Some scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries for example, such as the development of medicines, while others are motivated by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, typically for the benefit of humans. Some scientists are just curious, while others hold a an intense faith in God. What is Our Site ? Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken as such. Although Creationists may not all be Christian but they are a majority. Creationists are typically divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists. The most well-known kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of six days of creation is literal and that the universe as well as life on Earth were created just recently. OECs are less well known However, they are as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions-of-years old and believe that evolution is a lie. Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origin of life on Earth. They assert that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought shunned miracles in fear that they could lose their credibility. Some creationists are able to accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their belief “theistic evolution.” This is also referred to as “continuous evolutionism” or the “evolution of the created species.” The theory suggests that God creates the original species and then allows them to change over time. Eventually, these evolutionary changes will result in new species identical to the original species. Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the original species were created simultaneously, and that they grew slowly afterward. They deny the notion of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating life can't come from nonliving matter. In general, the creationists are against teaching evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, some academic institutions and scientists are more flexible, and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula. What is Creationism? When people think of the concept of creationism, many of them think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this effort. STR has achieved its first victory by eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. The focus is now on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution too. STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and individuals. The goal, according to STR is to cleanse the world of what it calls “atheist materialism” that paints a negative view for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of the newest biology teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons aren't certain, but could be related to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the US. The KACR achieved many things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a creationist stance. It sparked interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present. On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
